Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
Physical Properties of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2)
1. Low Relative Density
2.Melting Point and Boiling Point
The melting point of rutile titanium dioxide is 1850ºC, and its boiling point is (3200±300)ºC. Anatase titanium dioxide will transform into rutile type at high temperatures.
3.Dielectric Constant
Titanium dioxide has a relatively high dielectric constant, while the dielectric constant of anatase titanium dioxide is only 48.
4. Electrical Conductivity
Titanium dioxide exhibits semiconductor properties, and its electrical conductivity increases with the rise of temperature.
5. Hardness
The hardness of rutile titanium dioxide is 6-6.5, and that of anatase titanium dioxide is 5.5-6.0 (based on the Mohs hardness scale of 10 grades).
6. Weak Hygroscopicity
7. Good Thermal Stability
8. Particle Size
The particle size distribution of titanium dioxide is a key indicator affecting its performance and application in end products.

Product Description

Titanium Dioxide has extremely stable chemical properties and is a weakly acidic amphoteric oxide. At room temperature, it hardly reacts with other elements and compounds, is insoluble in water, fats, dilute acids, most inorganic acids, and alkaline solutions, and can only dissolve in hydrofluoric acid (forming fluorotitanic acid).
What makes it special is that Titanium Dioxide has photochemical activity-it can undergo continuous redox reactions under light irradiation, and the anatase type shows particularly significant activity under ultraviolet irradiation. Based on these properties, Titanium Dioxide is widely used in the coating industry (improving weather resistance and hiding power), plastic industry (product coloring and anti-aging), paper field (enhancing paper whiteness and opacity), photocatalytic materials (water purification, air formaldehyde removal), and cosmetics (physical sunscreen), serving as a multi-functional inorganic material across industries.

Titanium Dioxide Production Processes
There are two main production processes for titanium dioxide (TiO2): the Sulphate Process and the Chloride Process.
Globally, approximately 56% of titanium dioxide is produced via the Chloride Process. Among the products manufactured through this process, over 70% comes from leading titanium dioxide producers such as DuPont (USA). For other countries-including China-most titanium dioxide plants still primarily adopt the Sulphate Process, though some Chinese plants have also begun using the Chloride Process for titanium dioxide production.

APPLICATION

The application of titanium dioxide presents the characteristic of "industry-specific customization", and different fields have different focus on its performance, which is specifically reflected as follows:
1. Coating Industry (Largest Application Field)
Rutile titanium dioxide is the mainstream, accounting for more than 80% of the total titanium dioxide used in coatings. It can make coatings have high color saturation and strong hiding power, reducing the amount of pigments while lowering costs. It also enhances the UV aging resistance and mechanical strength of the paint film, preventing cracking. It is suitable for scenarios such as interior and exterior wall coatings of buildings, mechanical equipment paints, container coatings, and steel structure protective paints, ensuring that the coating remains durable in complex environments for a long time.
2. Plastic Industry (Second-Largest Consumer Field)
Adding titanium dioxide can significantly improve the light resistance, weather resistance, and whiteness of plastic products, preventing plastic parts used outdoors (such as plastic doors and windows, outdoor furniture) from aging and becoming brittle due to sunlight and rain. At the same time, it improves the processing fluidity and mechanical strength of plastics, and is widely used in general plastics such as polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride, as well as engineering plastics, to meet the performance requirements of different scenarios.
3. Paper Industry
Uncoated anatase titanium dioxide is mostly used in conventional paper (such as office paper, book paper). It can replace fluorescent brighteners to improve the whiteness and opacity of paper, making the paper thinner but not easy to show through during printing. Laminated paper (such as decorative stickers, insulating paper) requires surface-treated rutile titanium dioxide to meet the heat resistance and light resistance requirements during processing and subsequent use, ensuring the stable performance of the paper.

4. Enamel and Ceramic Industry
Enamel-grade titanium dioxide: It has high purity, uniform particle size, strong opacity, and non-transparency. It can make the enamel coating thin, smooth, and highly acid-resistant. Moreover, it is easy to mix with other materials without caking during manufacturing, and is suitable for products such as enamel cookware and sanitary ware.
Ceramic-grade titanium dioxide: It has excellent high-temperature resistance (remaining non-gray for 1 hour at a high temperature of 1200ºC) and high refractive index. It can make the surface of ceramic products uniform and bright in color, and is widely used in architectural ceramics (such as ceramic tiles) and decorative ceramics to improve the appearance texture of products.

Alternatives
To address the high cost of titanium dioxide (TiO2), alternatives such as lithopone and calcined kaolin (commonly known as "duanbaifen" in Chinese) have emerged in the market. However, their overall performance is far inferior to that of TiO2, so they can only serve as partial substitutes rather than full replacements.

ZIBO CHEMIC Focus: Product Indicators of Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) - The Bridge Between Performance, Process & Application
Product indicators of titanium dioxide directly determine its application performance, suitable scenarios, and market positioning-serving as the core bridge connecting "performance, production process, and end-use application".
Optical Indicators (Whiteness, Hiding Power): Define its "pigment value" - the key to enhancing product appearance (e.g., brightness of coatings, opacity of paper).
Chemical Indicators (Purity, Corrosion Resistance): Determine its "stability" - ensuring long-term performance retention in harsh environments (e.g., resistance to acid/alkali in industrial coatings).
Physical Indicators (Particle Size, Dispersibility): Govern its "processability" - affecting ease of mixing with substrates (e.g., uniform dispersion in plastic masterbatches).
Special Indicators (Weather Resistance, Heavy Metal Content): Decide its "scenario adaptability" - enabling compliance with industry-specific requirements (e.g., low heavy metals for food-contact materials, high weather resistance for outdoor coatings).
From product types to indicator focus:
Rutile TiO2 targets "outdoor & high-end applications", with indicators prioritizing weather resistance and high hiding power (ideal for automotive coatings, exterior architectural paints).
Anatase TiO2 focuses on "indoor & functional scenarios", with indicators emphasizing whiteness and photocatalytic activity (suitable for interior wall paints, photocatalytic water treatment materials).
In terms of production processes: Chloride-process TiO2, featuring higher purity and uniform particle size, outperforms sulfate-process TiO2 in high-end indicators (e.g., low impurities, excellent dispersibility). It has thus become the mainstream direction of industry upgrading, catering to demands for high-performance products.
By mastering these indicator logics, you can accurately select TiO2 grades based on specific needs: for example, rutile TiO2 for outdoor coatings, or food-grade TiO2 for food-contact applications. This avoids cost waste or performance failure caused by "misselection", ensuring your production efficiency and end-product quality.
